Turtle species nears extinction as last known female dies

The female turtle died after an artificial insemination procedure at the

Suzhou Zoo in Jiangsu province on Saturday. Though Chinese and foreign experts confir

med that it was healthy before the surgery, the animal went into a coma and never woke up.

The operation went well, according to the zoo. The f

emale turtle was more than 90 years old and had gone through four such procedures.

The experts harvested the turtle’s ovarian tissue and stored it in liquid nitr

ogen for future research. They are working on the carcass to determine the cause of death.

The turtle came from Changsha Zoo in Hunan province in 2008 to meet

the only male specimen in China, which continues to live at the Suzhou Zoo.

The male turtle, thought to be more than 100 years

old, has poor sperm motility and its genitals were damaged. Since it could not naturally impr

egnate the female, experts had undertaken four insemination procedures since 2015.

“It’s a disastrous loss for the protection of the species,” said Liu Nonglin, chief engineer of the Chinese Association of Zoolog

ical Gardens. “The experts had researched former insemination surgeries, consulted colleagues and made the best

surgery and rescue plan. The team even experimented on three male and two female large-sized Asian turtles usi

ng the same surgical procedures. But the tragedy happened even though the surgery was well planned.”

More than 1 meter in length and weighing more than 100 kilograms, Yangtze giant softshell turtles are the world’s largest freshw

ater turtles. Besides the one male left in China, two other animals, whose sex is unknown, have been observed in the wild in Vietnam.

“Artificial insemination surgery for the turtle requires procedures

such as anesthesia, blood sampling and sperm extraction,” Wen Cheng, a turtle expert with

International Union for Conservation of Nature, was quoted by Lifeweek.com.cn as saying.

Shanghai, which in 2013 began promoting the etique

tte of standing on the right and walking on the left, is not the first city to abandon the

norm. Many cities in China, including Tianjin, Xi’an and Nanjing have dropped the practice.

“It used to be a courtesy not to block people walking on the escalat

or, but given the safety concerns and damage to the machines, holding the handrails and standi

ng still should be advocated,” lawyer Liu Linsheng was quoted as saying in the local news portal Eastday.

The new notices, although not compulsory, have won support from commuters.

“It’s been a habit for most to leave space on the left for those who walk

on escalators, so we may not be able to change our habits overnight,” said Peng Xu

an, a commuter in Shanghai. “But for the safety of everyone, if you want to walk or are in a hurry, you can use the stairs.”

Peng said he has seen some people fall while trying to move too quickly

on an escalator, adding that during peak hours standing on both sides is more efficient.

Speaking of the Chinese economy, Liu said, China is

accelerating its transition from high-speed growth to high-quality develo

pment, as its economic structure continues to upgrade, and new momentum sustains remarkable growth.

China has adopted a proactive fiscal policy this year with greater intensity and enhanced efficiency, rolling out substa

ntial tax cuts and fee reductions, and its economic growth in the first quarter has gotten off to a good start, Liu said.

The minister said his country will continue to significantly relax ma

rket access, enhance the protection of intellectual property rights, and carry out larg

er-scale tax cuts and fee reductions, so as to create a more attractive investment and business environment.

On the sidelines of the Development Committee meeting, Liu met with David Malpass, the new World Bank president, as scheduled.

Giant panda to leave for Austria in 4-year research project

A giant panda will leave for Austria for a four-year collaborative research project, a

panda research base in Southwest China’s Sichuan province said Monday.

Yuanyuan, a 20-year-old male, will leave Chengdu at 4:45 am Tuesday for it

s new home at the Schonbrunn Zoo in Vienna, according to the China Conservation and Res

earch Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) based in the Wolong National Nature Reserve.

A farewell party for the panda was held at the base Monday afternoon.

The research on Yuanyuan in Austria will enhance China’s cooperation

with Austria in areas such as breeding, disease control and prevention as well as the rep

roduction of the giant panda, said Zhang Zhizhong, an official with the CCRCGP.

The base has launched giant panda research programs in cooperat

ion with 15 zoos in 13 countries and regions so far, according to Zhang.

Even though there are amazing innovations nearly ever

medical, we believe that we’re still just scratching the surface of the potential for 3D printing as an enabl

er of digital transformation,” said Tim Greene, research director at consultancy IDC.

Industry experts, however, have noticed a gradual paradigm shift. Acco

rding to Agam, the sector is on the cusp of a transformation from prototyping and desig

Conglomerates are leading the pack, with GE celebrating the 30,000th additively-manufac

hina’s smartphone shipments down 4.1% in March

China’s smartphone shipments fell 4.1 percent year on year in March to 26.94 million units, dat

a from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) showed.

Last month, smartphones made up 94.9 percent of all mobile phone shipments in the country, ac

cording to a report from the CAICT, a research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Despite the mobile phone market shrinking, the drop has been moderated, said the report.

Overall mobile phone shipments went down 6 percent in March, narrowing from the 1

.9-percent slump in February to 28.37 million units, among which 95.1 percent were 4G phones.

Chinese-brand mobile phones accounted for 90.5 percent of total shi

pments last month, up from 90.3 percent in February 2019, according to the report.
